GOMBO
Biography
Gombo, an Afro-European visual artist based in Marseille, distinguishes himself through an artistic practice deeply rooted in the exploration of invisible narratives and the deconstruction of Eurocentric perspectives. His work, centered on textile motifs, uses the subversion of Dutch wax codes as a tool for reappropriation and cultural resistance.

Trained in narrative drawing in Nantes, Gombo began his career in the animation industry as a storyboard artist. His move to the Château Rouge district in Paris marked a decisive turning point, leading him to reconnect with his African roots and explore his plural identity. The rediscovery of wax fabric, omnipresent in this neighborhood, rekindled childhood memories linked to his Angolan heritage and pushed him to develop a personal artistic language.

His mastery of artisanal screen printing, acquired at the Serre Joint workshop in La Rochelle, allows him to transpose the aesthetics of wax onto canvas and paper. The artist also uses digital drawing and artificial intelligence to design complex motifs, which he then materializes through screen printing and the use of water-based pigment inks. This hybrid approach combines the rigor of digital with the expressiveness of manual gesture, emphasizing the importance of preserving and transmitting traditional know-how.

Gombo is a transmedia artist who invests in public spaces and institutions to question multicultural memories. His clandestine installation of the screen print "Afropean Passport" at the Mucem is a striking example. He also explores virtual reality with his animated film project "The Private Portrait," and collaborates with fashion designers on decolonial projects, such as his residency in Salvador de Bahia as part of the France-Brazil 2025 cultural season.​

His works have been presented in numerous collective and solo exhibitions, notably "Museum Regard Afropéen" at the Solarium Gallery in Marseille and, upcoming, "Wax" at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris in 2025.

Gombo is an engaged artist who uses his art as a vector for intercultural dialogue, celebrating African heritages and inviting critical reflection on history and collective memory.

Gombo, artiste visuel afro-européen établi à Marseille, se distingue par une pratique artistique profondément ancrée dans l'exploration des récits invisibilisés et la déconstruction des perspectives eurocentrées. Son travail, centré sur le motif textile, utilise le détournement des codes du wax hollandais comme un outil de réappropriation et de résistance culturelle.

Formé au dessin narratif à Nantes, Gombo a débuté sa carrière dans l'industrie du dessin animé en tant que storyboarder. Son installation dans le quartier de Château Rouge à Paris marque un tournant décisif, l'amenant à renouer avec ses racines africaines et à explorer son identité plurielle. La redécouverte du tissu wax, omniprésent dans ce quartier, ravive des souvenirs d'enfance liés à son héritage angolais et le pousse à développer un langage artistique personnel.

Sa maîtrise de la sérigraphie artisanale, acquise à l'atelier Serre Joint de La Rochelle, lui permet de transposer l'esthétique du wax sur toile et papier. L'artiste utilise également le dessin numérique et l'intelligence artificielle pour concevoir des motifs complexes, qu'il matérialise ensuite par la sérigraphie et l'utilisation d'encres pigmentaires à l'eau. Cette approche hybride allie la rigueur du numérique à l'expressivité du geste manuel, soulignant l'importance de préserver et de transmettre les savoir-faire traditionnels.

Gombo est un artiste transmedia qui investit l'espace public et les institutions pour interroger les mémoires multiculturelles. Son installation clandestine de la sérigraphie "Passeport Afropéen" au Mucem en est un exemple marquant. Il explore également la réalité virtuelle avec son projet de film d'animation "The Private Portrait", et collabore avec des créateurs de mode pour des projets décoloniaux, comme sa résidence à Salvador de Bahia dans le cadre de la saison culturelle France-Brésil 2025.
